Verified Purchase. Let me begin by saying that I am a huge admirer of Jackie Chan and his work. Through the years, JC's work has obviously changed.
Between the ubiquity of special effects and Chan's age, most of his recent films are at best faint ghosts of his earlier work.
And I suppose that's OK and I've made peace with it. As a teenager, when I got a "new" Jackie Chan movie, I watched with breathless anticipation, hardly able to wait for the next great fight scene or stunt.
Now, I know that I'm going to see a slower, older, more predictable Chan futz his way through short fight scenes and fake, CGI enhanced stunts.
All that said, Railroad Tigers was still pretty hard to watch. There are no sustained martial arts sequences, no memorable or clever tricks or stunts, and frankly there are too many characters to keep track of.
Some of the characters have engaging backstories or endearing qualities, but most of them are caricatures and serve almost no purpose. I finished watching only because of my loyalty to Jackie Chan, not because I cared about the outcome.
Another issue I have with the film is that it can't ever decide what kind of movie it wants to be. In the rare moments it takes itself seriously, there are glimpses of a credible story--but then seconds later we're treated to a terrible joke, or someone dying in a "funny" way, or someone somehow making light of getting seriously hurt or seriously hurting someone else.
At times, it looked smooth and polished, like a "normal" movie, but then at other times the quality looked so poor--like it was shot on an iPhone or how some video looks when you see it on demo TVs at the store.
The quality was sometimes similar to those awful History Channel reenactment. Ultimately, you used to be able to watch a Jackie Chan film and know that he was the star--you'd see him do amazing tricks or stunts, you'd see some cool and creative martial arts sequences, and you'd see JC engage in a lot of slapstick and other silly humor.
Railroad Tigers features no martial arts and basically no stunts, and most of the slapstick involves other characters--and because there are so many of those characters, it just doesn't have the same effect as it might if JC was the focus.
I'll always give Chan's films a watch, and I'm probably more forgiving than most viewers, but I have to be honest: Railroad Tigers was pretty bad.
Going back to Jackie Chan s classic Hong Kong films, a railroad worker Chan and his ragtag group of freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when they decide to ambush a heavily armed military train filled with desperately needed provisions.
I'm giving you the description given by the DVD. I would have found it hard to really do this story justice.
I watched it in the Chinese with the subtitles and I am always okay with subtitles. This Comedy-Drama is very entertaining and the funny is funny.
The drama parts are serious and not only that sometimes sad. I did not see the outcome coming but it was excellent.
The action was as is in all Jackie Chan movies I love this movie and if you are a fan of Chinese movies and action movies Also contains some humorous elements.
Overall, this movie was a lot of fun. This is a very enjoyable fast-paced Hong Kong type action period film with an excellent Filmed in Northern China.
Bonus materials are interesting as well. And yes there are english subtitles, as in is set in China the film is in Mandarin. I think the problem with most reviewers is a lack of understanding, of Chinese mentality, history or of Mandarin, and that is also a fault of the production for English speakers.
One example is that no where on the DVD cover or or blurb or any review is what was translated for me from the Chinese on the cover- this movie is based on a true story.
I think without a reference point they lose their footing, not realizing the horrors visited on the Chinese by the Japanese at this time period.
If it was understood that these peasants were fighting the equivalent of the Nazis, a little like Hogan's Heroes also loosely based on a true story that would orient the viewers, and if they understood more about Japanese culture, they'd likely get the jokes.
As we are steam train aficionados, studying Mandarin, and learning about Chinese culture, and also I like Jackie Chan movies- I didn't even realize it was a Jackie Chan movie or that was Jackie Chan until some time into the movie.
Its a lovely movie I watched several times and very funny. One person found this helpful. It's not great.
I liked it. It's not great, but it's decent. The action is all right, but the comedy is the best part of the movie, honestly.
Don't expect a martial arts movie just because Jackie Chan is in it, because it isn't one. Vintage Jackie Chan, as Chinese workers hi-jack a Japanese munitions train.
Good action. Another bad movie for a really good actor, Jackie Chan. We couldn't get through the whole movie because it is so lame.
Sorry, Jackie, who ever wrote this should be fired, you can do much better. We love your older movies and we've watched them a countless number of times.
This one just doesn't work for you. There was a couple of parts in the film that were really kind of funny but the rest of it was just terrible I don't think many people are going to like or enjoy this film it ran on forever and I was surprised that it wasn't a better film considering it was Jackie Chan in the film was very surprised.
